A big congratulations to Teena Singh, who joined the team as a Director of Client Services in 2020, on her promotion to Vice President of Advertiser Services and two-year anniversary at adMarketplace! During the last two years, she has invested in our employees' growth and mentorship and demonstrated what it means to be a strong leader. Here’s what Teena has to say about her professional journey:
Tell us about your career path and what brought you to adMarketplace.
I feel so lucky to have had such a successful career journey so far. Growing up, I wanted to be a teacher until I took a high school internship which introduced me to the world of business. I got to visit many brands across different industries, and after seeing the impact these teams have on their customers and clients, I knew that was the environment I wanted to be in. Before joining adMarketplace, I spent most of my career at leading ad agencies. I worked at really impactful brands like DIRECTV, Auto Club of Southern California, and Verizon across Print, Search, Display & Social Channels. In August 2020, I joined adMarketplace to support the growth of the Client Services team. I have worked with some of the best in the business, learning hard and soft skills along the way that I can now impart to my team at adMarketplace.
In a Built In article, Adam J. Epstein, President and Chief Operating Officer, described adMarketplace as having a “culture of opportunity.” What does “culture of opportunity” mean to you?
My family emigrated from Guyana to the US when I was very young to provide my sister and me with the best possible opportunities –the world was our oyster! As a result, I worked hard in school and post-grad to explore and learn as much as possible to position myself for future success. At adMarketplace, employees are encouraged to be curious, ask questions, and learn from other teams. We not only want growth for our employees but support them in exploring different career paths within the company and in the industry. It’s vital that our employees don’t feel constrained by their job title or locked into a particular career path if they’re being drawn in another direction. Instead, we want them to learn about the different roles and opportunities here at adMarketplace to determine what would be best for their success and growth. We’re currently working on a rotational program to facilitate this and encourage our employees to explore their different professional interests early in their careers.
Looking at adMarketplace and the industry as a whole, how do you envision your role as VP, Advertiser Services?
Although I ultimately decided not to become a teacher, I can still bring my passion for teaching and that mindset into my current role. In addition, my experience on the agency side has given me a unique perspective in my role here at adMarketplace. I am focused on having the team come to the table with strategic solutions and recommendations for our clients – constantly asking my team “why” or “so what” to get their critical thinking juices flowing. Having female mentors early on in my career significantly impacted my professional journey: I had an open and safe outlet to ask for advice and receive consistent feedback. I am passionate about continuing to mentor and guide the new generation of female adtech leaders! I love partnering with my mentees on developing their career track, offering advice, and sharing past experiences to help guide them to where they want to be in five or ten years. It brings me so much joy and makes me feel successful at my job when one of my mentees comes and shares how they’ve accomplished their goals. At the end of the day, I want everyone to be successful and am willing to help anyone get there.
What advice would you give to new graduates as they enter the professional world?
Your first job is the starting ground of your career: use it as an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and be open to new experiences. It’s okay not to know everything; nobody is perfect! Learn from constructive feedback, find creative ways to add value to your organization, and stay curious. Don’t be afraid to find someone who inspires you and ask them to be your mentor!
